The Generation House, my first studio project of graduate school, provides a home for senior citizens, play and learning space for children and a cafe that reaches out to the neighborhood. Spaces inside and out of the building encourage interaction between the diverse users of the site, especially between children and seniors. The program is made up of 5,200 SF day care and 1,500 SF cafe of the ground floor and 12 senior apartments on the second and third levels. The first part of this exercise was an in-depth analysis and urban design of the context: the neighborhood of Goose Hollow in West Portland. The major interventions were adding density and public space and establishing a stronger connection to the rest of the city.
